Volunteer I have and do volunteer in a public library assisting with a genealogy project and also in the reference department. This experience is so special and helpful especially while a student in the MLIS program. The different places one could possibly work in and gaining personal staff interaction is beyond words. Libraries are such special places and having the opportunity to volunteer makes it that more special. I will continue throughout my lifetime to volunteer at a library, while learning all the new tricks of the trade and hopefully be gainfully employed in one some-day.
My current plan has allowed me to become a volunteer with the Literacy Council of Union County (LCUC). I am beginning a new volunteer position with the LCUC as a tutor for a hispanic member. This is a 2 hours once a week position. I love helping people read of any age or background. I am a member of the ALA, ALSC, and LITA and plan to become more active with their round tables, conferences and webinars. The internet is filled with blogs regarding librarians and I follow a good many now. One good recommendation from my classmates is the http://www.thelifeguardlibrarian.tumblr.com/tumblarians. I have finally entered the social media platform and my tumblr account and LinkedIn account are here. Webinars are very popular and an informational source to utilize. The professional organizations open to librarians is of great interest to myself and time is the only thing lacking as of right now. With completion of this program I plan to invest in a membership at more professional organizations. Information obtained from such sources is very important for a librarian to stay current and up to date on all happenings within an information organization. |
