LIS 630 Technology for Information Management
I had to develop a relational database for circulation module of an Integrated Library System. The first project was created in Microsoft access database. This was fun and exciting and getting Microsoft Access to cooperate is always a challenge. It is not on a steady platform so it changes all your information from time to time. Our group project was to create a free database from KOHA which is an open source integrated library system. This was so engaging and educational, not only were we learning the library system but learning the ins and outs of KOHA since it is open source. It can be a challenge if a library were to take on this type of source because of the non support associated with it. Our professor stated that this is used in the state of Georgia at many libraries. I believe a large system would not be beneficial to utilize KOHA, but perhaps a smaller system would do justice.
LIS 635 Website Usability and Design class.
The knowledge learned in this class will benefit me for years to come. Usability within a website is great knowledge to have. This helps in the creation of design and one must think like a designer thinks. The user is the audience and all functions must be friendly and accessible. My Storytime website on the front page of this website was fun learning what works and more fun creating it, since it is my passion. The engaged class opportunities from classmates rating our projects was so beneficial. I did get high ratings for usability and graphic content. Since this was my 3rd website design class I still learned new things. Technology is my passion and anything related to learning the new tools or how to create a great website is a positive reinforcement for myself.
LIS 636 Media design summer 2016
This class was engaging and so much fun. I had to create a Curation on anything we would like to. I decided to do mine on creativity and the classroom where technology can be utilized. I utilized all the programming software websites for free for all ages and classrooms. I put a video about creativity and an interactive website for a murder mystery at the metropolitan museum. I found some books and an ebook. I found an event for teachers to attend this summer by Institute of Play. The only obstacle I found was finding a good platform to load my suggestions to. I started with Google + Collections and that was fine but I forgot to make it public. This public and private viewing is quite confusing on each platform. I have learned quite a bit about curation platforms and what works best. The different platforms can hold different media and Google + Collections had by far the best options to display. There is a video, text, pdf, and photo option. Not all of the platforms offer this much variety to display your content. So I have learned to find what does the platform offer first. I used the platform Bundlr (which is non-existent today) so unfortunately I cannot show my specific curation, but it can be viewed on the above website curation.
